Advice I believe Martin Luther King, Jr. would give to Barack Obama if Martin Luther King, Jr. were still alive, based on quotes from King's life

"There is nothing new about poverty. What is new, however, is that we now have the resources to get rid of it."--Martin Luther King Jr.

To me, this quote suggests that if Martin Luther King, Jr. were still alive today he would advise Barack Obama to eradicate poverty.  King would advise Obama to create jobs to help the poor, much like FDR did during the Great Depression.  King would also advise Obama to try to get Obama's health care bill passed, as this bill would aid those who have trouble affording the payments  they must make for their medical care and would aid those who have no health care. Due to the recent recession, many people have experienced job loss and pay cuts.  King would be supportive of efforts to help said people.

"The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human, and therefore, brothers."--Martin Luther King, Jr.

To me, this quote suggests that King would advise Obama to work on uniting the citizens of the US, and to work on passing laws, with the goal of equality for all people.

"I am not interested in power for power's sake, but I'm interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good."--Martin Luther King, Jr.

I believe that King would advise Obama to avoid letting Obama's power as president corrupt him.  King seems to believe that it is important to do that which is right, not necessarily that which is popular.

"We must use our vast resources of wealth to aid the undeveloped countries of the world. Have we spent far too much of our national budget in establishing military bases around the world and far too little in establishing bases of genuine concern and understanding?"--Martin Luther King, Jr.

I believe that King would advise Obama to use the US's power and influence to assist third world countries in development. This would be finding ways to alleviate poverty, disease, and malnutrition. The below image is of Obama visiting Kenya.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."--Martin Luther King, Jr.

To me, this quote states that King would advise Obama to establish laws to protect minority groups, such as laws concerning affirmative action. King would advise Obama to also create social welfare programs, to help the disadvantaged.

"Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated."--Martin Luther King, Jr.

I believe that King would advise Obama to strive for open communication between the US and other countries. King would be proud of the fact that Obama has been working towards the goal of open communication, by visiting other countries, and meeting with their leaders and citizens. This also promotes understanding between people of the US and peoples of other countries and cultures. An example is Obama's speech in Cairo where he reached out to the Muslim world.
